The King and the artists
Once upon a time there was a King who ruled a great and glorious nation. The person he liked most of all his subjects was the court painter of whom he was very proud. Everybody agreed that this old man painted the greatest pictures in the whole kingdom and the king spend hours each day just looking at them.
However, one day a weird and dirty stranger arrived at the court claiming that he was the greatest painter in the land. The indignant king ordered a competition to be held between the two artists. He was sure the arrogant vagabond would be taught an embarrassing lesson. They both had one month to produce a masterpiece.
After thirty days of working really hard day and night, both the artists were ready. They placed their paintings, each hidden under a cloth, in the great hall of the castle. A large crowd of people watched as the king ordered the cloth to be pulled off the court painter’s work first. Everyone was amazed when they saw his wonderful oil painting. It was of a table set for a feast with an exquisite, ornate bowl in the centre filled with all sorts of exotic fruit. As the people stood admiring it open-mouthed, a little bird flew down from the roof and hungrily tried to snatch one of the grapes from the painted bowl, hit the picture and fell down dead with shock at feet of the king.
“Aha!” exclaimed the king. “My artist has produced a painting so wonderful that it has fooled Nature herself, surely you must agree that he is the greatest painter who ever lived!” But the vagabond said nothing and just looked down at his feet. Now pull the blanket from your painting and let us see what you have for us!” cried the king. But the stranger remained motionless and said nothing. Getting impatient, the king came forward and put his hand out to take off the blanket only to stop and freeze in horror at the last time… WHY?
“You see” said the vagabond, “while your famous artist is content to fool a little bird, I have fooled a king.”
